CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

“Angela.” Joanna escorted her and Patricia inside. “I’d like you to meet my family. This is my husband River.”

He pushed his glasses up. “It’s very nice to meet you both.” He shook their hands. “Welcome to our home.”

“Well, it’s a lovely home indeed,” Patricia said. “Isn’t it, Angela?”

“Uh, yes it is.” She tried to avoid the fire shooting from the Fletchers’ kids’ stares.

“Thanks for having me.”

“You’re welcome here anytime,” River said.

“I don’t know about all that.” Karen whispered to JC.

“You must be Karen, right?” Angela ogled the beautiful young woman. “Your mom showed me a picture. I thought you were pretty then, but you’re stunning in person.”

“Hmm, thanks.” Karen twisted her long curls around her finger. “I wish I could say I saw you ahead of time too, but I didn’t get that luxury.”

Joanna presented a shaky smile. “You’ve already met JC.”

“Hi.” Angela waved.

JC held up his index finger.

Joanna gestured to the lanky white guy with the blank stare. “And this is Greg Peters, Karen’s fiancé.”

He smiled. “It’s a pleasure to meet you both.”

“Well, uh…” JC cleared his throat. “I gotta get back outside. We’re building a gazebo.”

“Oh, that sounds nice.” Patricia smiled.

“JC is a genius at building things.” Joanna hugged him.

He pulled away. “It was, uh…nice meeting you, Angela.” He left.

“Okay, that was beyond awkward,” Angela said.

“We can thank Mom for that.” Karen cut her eyes to Joanna. “She didn’t tell us you were white.”

“I know it was wrong and I’m sorry, but everything’s out in the open now.”

“Is it?” Karen ran upstairs.

“Uh…” Greg finished his soda and crumpled up the can. “I’m gonna go outside and give JC a hand. It was nice meeting you.” He left.

“They’re dropping like flies, aren’t they?” River chuckled. “Let me say you don’t have to feel uncomfortable or anything around us, Angela. I meant what I said. You’re welcome here anytime.” He kissed Joanna’s cheek. “You’re my wife’s daughter which means I care about you too.”

“And I’m supposed to believe that when you don’t know me?”

“You don’t have to know someone to care about them.” He straightened his glasses.

“Well, where I come from, it’s suspicious when folks claim to care and they don’t know you.”

“Angela.” Patricia nudged her. “She didn’t mean it like it sounded.”

“It’s fine.” River tapped his watch. “I have an online conference with a student real quick. Excuse me.” He went upstairs.

Angela looked at Joanna. “Now if I could get you to disappear as fast, I’ll be set.”

“Angela.” Patricia poked her arm. “Stop it.”

“It’s okay. Angela has every right to be upset with me. I’m just glad you came today. That means something.”

Someone revved their motor in front of the house. Angela peeked out of the little window on the door.

Rush hopped out of his car with a tool box and ran up the porch. “What the hell?” Angela asked. “You know Rush Marshall, Joanna?”

He burst in the door. “Hello! Hello!” He stopped when he saw Angela. “Angela?”

His pecks spread against the white tank top. Sweat cascaded down his rippling arms.
